The RHI also provides a tariff for feeding biomethane into the natural gas grid

The National Grid Company, which operates the gas grid has estimated that a significant proportion of the UK’s gas could come from biogas.

Although not specifically heat production, the RHI provides a tariff (similar to the export tariff of the Feed-In Tariffs) to those exporting natural gas back into the grid. This could be a particularly appealing tariff for farmers, who often have both the necessary space and waste to make anaerobic digestion a feasible energy source.

One source of biogas is anaerobic digestion (AD) which creates biomethane from sources including food waste and farmyard residues. Other process for biomethane production will also be eligible, except initially landfill gas.
