Biomass Sustainability

The RHI has criteria to ensure that biomass used as a fuel comes from sustainable sources

The government’s approach to the proposed criteria was announced in the response to this consultation.

Setting the criteria

Once in place, the sustainability criteria will apply to all RHI installations – including those accredited before the criteria come into force

There will be two main routes to compliance:

• real-time declarations, backed up by an annual report
• use of fuel from a registered supplier list

Timetable for introduction

DECC hopes that the criteria will come into effect in April 2014.

The land-use criteria are intended to come into effect

no sooner than April 2014 and no later than April 2015, following the approach taken in the Renewables Obligation
